Cover Race
A good friend of mine just sent me this interesting article about the Justine Larbalestier book Liar and its controversial cover. I completely agree with the change and am glad that I'm not the only editor who has to deal with cover issues sometimes. Bloomsbury is a great publisher, mind you, and every publisher has covers that come along and just . . . well . . . make us all shake our heads with confusion.

Wow. So many things I could say right now. In fact, I just erased an entire paragraph.
ReplyDeleteYeah I just saw this thing on Stacy Whitman's blog a week ago or something. Whole deal sounds foolish if you ask me.
ReplyDeleteI'm just sick of the race card. Really? I understand that the author has the right to have her book honestly represented, but the whole race thing is irritating.
ReplyDeleteMy immediate reaction was, "What were they thinking?" They should have known that first cover would not be received well.I'm glad they were willing to listen and make the change.
ReplyDeleteWhen my book gets published, I'll just want a picture of Kirk on the cover. No racial confusion, no overblown art work. Just Kirk :)
ReplyDeleteExpect that book, Deb, to be a best-seller...nay, a worldwide best-seller overnight. Canonical potential.
