"Let me tell you something about fortitude, brother. For five thousand years of recorded human history, this world has been governed by one thing: brute force. Sometimes it's the continental bully picking on the sovereign state, and sometimes it's the playground bully picking on the kid with the Fun Fruits in his lunch box. The only thing that keeps those damn bullies from taking over permanently is the individual desire to be FREE. It happens when people decide that only they can choose what's right for themselves, and no one else. And when they get up and fight for that right, and hold out until they get it or die trying...that's fortitude. Fortitude is the only way to have freedom, 'cause if you don't have fortitude, well, it looks like that bully is eating your Fun Fruits, and I ain't gonna shed a tear for you. You want those damn Fun Fruits, you better punch that bully right in the face and hold out. Welcome to the world."
It was a minor addition to the last version for Tristi. Riley asks Reuben why he's so gung-ho on fortitude, and that's his answer. This takes place on the Sky Hopper en route to that place where they have the big brou-ha-ha battle (no spoilers for Deb!)
Fortitude, noun:
ReplyDeleteFinding the physical and emotional strength to face adversity, i.e. not killing your toddler during potty training.
"Little Johnny peed all over the bathroom for the fourth time in two days, but luckily his mom found the fortitude to let him live."
Oh what the HECK. Wonder where you got THIS idea, Arlene. :-)
ReplyDeleteThat's right,Graham. I'm a shameless poacher with not an ounce of remorse to go with it. ;)

ReplyDelete--Reuben Jones, "Sidewinder" (later draft)
How come I don't have that draft?!
ReplyDeleteLove the speech by Reuben. It sounds exactly like something he'd say.

The only thing I like about our group picture is that my tree looks so pretty.
ReplyDeleteNext time we are all in the same place, we must get a new picture. Kirk in a cheese-cake pose.
I vote to ditch the picture. I think we need to be more mysterious.
ReplyDeleteWith respect to fortitude, I used to think I didn't have a lot, but the older I get I realize I am pretty fortitudious.
