Setting

I always swore I'd never live in Utah, and here I am. My life today is much different than when I lived in L.A. In many ways, I am a different person. I'd like to think, a better person.

My current work-in-progress is set in L.A. It takes me back to my former world. It's also made me think about how much setting impacts character development. Take the same character and put them in New York, the French Riviera, a small village in Africa, or another planet and their fate may be quite different.

I often wonder how intrinsically different I would be as a person if I had been born in a different state or country. How much of who I am today would exist, regardless of my environment?

  1. I ponder that too. I moved a lot as a kid and I wonder if I would be different if I didn't start over so many times.

Or if I never went to Seattle. As much as I would never move back there, I am glad I went to high school there. I'd be different if we'd stayed in AZ--I don't know if I'd still be alive.

  3. Think of all the movies where the entire plot is centered around a person being uprooted in some way and learning how to do things differently in their new surroundings. I think it's a great question to ask yourself when it comes to writing. Nice post, Linda. :)

  4. Its funny being in Seattle again. I am remembering things I've forgotten. Like, I knew I always wore heavy socks when I lived here but I couldn't remember why. Now I do--your feet get freezing.

And I remembered why we always made nose warmer jokes.

Sometimes its hard going home. (in a good way)

  5. You wouldn't be accustomed to breathing the sweet air of American freedom. A moment of silence, please.

Now go back to guns and fireworks. :-)
