Did I mention my 'why'? I thought it was obvious, but just in case...because I get to eat pie for breakfast. Duh! :)

The Holiday Season is Almost Upon Us! Hooray!
With Thanksgiving around the corner, I find my thoughts wandering more to the arena of food rather than the arena of writing...slightly. My husband helped me make out the holiday menu yesterday by being my scribe while I made dinner. He's very helpful that way. :) Anyway, back to the point which is: We have a tradition in my house that everyone gets to pick their favorite pie for Thanksgiving and I make it. I don't care if only one slice gets eaten, as long as everyone gets the kind that they want. It might seem wasteful except that the other half of that tradition is that the next morning everyone gets to have pie for breakfast. It's quite possibly one of my favorite traditions of all time. So I ask you: What's your favorite holiday tradition and why?

Pie for breakfast just wouldn't work for me--I need protien and high energy foods to survive the Black Friday riots at the local WalMart. I LOVE Black Friday. I go with my sister and mom (Steve took a vacation day this year, just so he could go along) and we divide and conquer. After Walmart is spent, we head to Shopko and Target. Then we find someplace to go out for breakfast. Mmmm, Black Friday--the competition, the unknowing, the surprises! Fun, Fun, Fun!!
ReplyDeleteBut, that's not my favorite Holiday Tradition. My favorite food tradition is my mom's Christmas Eve Openhouse. My grandpa was Danish and Santa came Christmas Eve in their house. When all the kids were married, Grandma and Grandpa had a big party on Christmas Eve with all the grandkids, etc.
Our family moved out of state, a lot. So my mom was always lonesome on Christmas Eve. So she started inviting anyone to drop by our house for a small party.
When my family lived in the Bay area, (where I was born) she added Clam Chowder to the menu. I love eating Clam Chowder on Christmas Eve. Several years ago I had a party too. Not on Christmas Eve, Utahns don't do that, but on the first Sunday of Advent. We had a tiny house then, and we had 70+ people crammed into it. And my mom came up from Arizona to make Clam Chowder.
This year, Steve works on Christmas Eve, so we will again have an open house party at my mom's with his crew and their families. It will be great . . . and there will be Clam Chowder.
Like DJ, I also go shopping on Black Friday. I am not a shopper. I don't like crowds. But there is something great about going one day, when the most sales are, and getting everything I need. And then I'm finished.
ReplyDeleteThe thing I like the most about the holidays isn't necessarily a tradition, but I just enjoy being able to spend time with the people I love the most.
Hands down its Chocolate Chip Pie and seeing Arlene and her family. Our new tradition of traveling to Reno for Thanksgiving keeps me going. I don't do black Friday much and certainly not this year, though I applaud all who will be out conquering the recession by taking advantage of the terrific sales. Good on ya!!! I'll be having chocolate chip pie for breakfast at Arlene's. YAY YAY YAY!!
ReplyDeleteWe do a family christmas gift exchange where everyone draws names and you have to get something for that person under $10. There is a different theme every year. We've had everything from colors to song or movie titles.
ReplyDeleteLast year we did famous paintings. The gift had to relate to either the name of the painting or something that appeared in it. My sister-in-law got Warhol's painting of Mao. We told her she could have just bought anything from Walmart because everything there is made in China.
Pie for breakfast sounds fun, although I would probably get a little sick after. I am also a big black Friday shopper. Like Deb I try to get all my shopping done in one day and anything left over I do online.
