I'm on a Sugar Bender

I need an intervention. Some candy is great to have around when you're up till midnight writing, but somebody please come and rid my house of the Halloween candy! I've been binging since Oct. 31st and, at this point, I don't see an end until the last piece is eaten. But on this subject, I'm very sad when I go through the bags of candy and realize the variety has completely changed since I was a kid. I'm almost strictly a chocolate girl, so I almost haven't noticed the disappearance of some candies until recently. For instance, does anyone else remember those sort of peanut butter nougats? They were almost like taffy, but they melted faster in your mouth and they had actual pieces of peanut in them. And they were always wrapped in black or orange wrappers like pieces of taffy. They were strictly Halloween fair and I don't think I saw one this year. And the Bit O' Honeys! I could eat those till I was sick. Again, not one in the kids' pillow cases. (yes, my kids took pillow cases. They trick-or-treated till they couldn't hold them anymore). Also, there was a shocking lack of jaw breakers and lemon heads. The travesty! I should weep for my childhood days.

  1. I'd be happy to help you eat all the candy, except I have my own huge bowl that I'm working through. It's hard to have self control when all the candy is staring at you, calling your name, begging for a place in your tummy.

  2. I'm with you on the sugar bender. It is impossible to start a diet this time of year! It doesn't help that my son really doesn't like sweets too much, so my husband and I end up eating it all.

As far as retro candy goes, I do remember the peanut butter taffy thingies and also like them. I liked the wax lips, just to play with, but I don't see them anymore.

There didn't seem to be too much chocolate this year. I think because it's more expensive. We're stuck with a bunch of smarties, lolipops, and the teeth destroyer things like Now and Laters and Starbursts.

  3. So I heard about Treats for the Troops right after Halloween a dentist office was collecting Halloween candy and sending it over seas to the troops and raffling off Wii game systems and stuff to convince kids to give up the loot.
Needless to say we were not taken in by it. I am running low though. I stashed the good chocolate in my secret draw but I'm down to my last 3 pieces. What will I do?

  4. For what it's worth, I've lost two pounds. And I didn't go trick-or-treating.

Just throwin it out there :-)

  5. My kids kept their candy. I had one peice. But on Halloween Night, as I fried up those 140 doughnuts and brewed up those 4 gallons of homemade root beer, I ate and drank enough of those sweet concoctions to last me until next Halloween. Aaaaah, hot doughnut bliss. Mmmmm

  6. You didn't go trick-or-treating, Graham? What's wrong with you?

DJ, I want your doughnut recipe. It's clear and cold here and doughnuts would hit the spot. :)
