Favorite Epic Fantasy Novels

I'm curious what everyone thinks is their favorite (not necessarily the general best) fantasy epic of all time, so I'm opening up the polls. I'm going to disqualify one series right off the bat, so we don't have everyone voting for that one: Lord of the Rings is off the table, folks. The more variety, the better, so maybe try to recognize one that isn't as well-known to people (e.g., everyone knows Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time). I'll be following up with one of my recent favorites next week, because I don't want to bias anyone.

Let's recognize some great novels here!

  1. I'm not sure I've ever read epic fantasy. I know that is a fall from grace in your eyes, but sadly true.

  2. Mistborn. Easily. I'm wondering if any of Sanderson's future works will even be as good as that series.

  3. I really liked the Sword of Truth series. I don't read a lot of epic fantasy, so I don't have as much to offer in this category, but those books were great.

  4. Now just a minute I know that I've read Epic Fantasy outside of the Childrens and YA genres but none are coming to mind (especially since we can't mention LOTR.) I love fantasy.

Does Lloyd Alexanders "Black Cauldron" Series count. "The Book of Three" started my journey into reading.

"Watership Down" was another book I loved!!! I read it when I was 12 and I still remember flipping to the dictionary in the back to learn the rabbit language.

    "Mistborn" Obviously.

Alot of lists are counting "Harry Potter" and I agree they are probably my favorite fantasy books but are they epic?

Someday can we talk about awesome fantasy movies? I have a ton of those. And "The Never Ending Movie" isn't on the list.

  5. Graham took mine. :(

I love epic fantasy, but I haven't read much of it because I was tainted by LOTR at a very young age. Once you've read that one, it's hard to move on to something else. I WILL say that, while it's not consider 'epic fantasy', the Narnia series was my all-time favorite growing up.

I don't think I have a current favorite right now, so I'm really curious to see what you've come up with, Kirk. :)
