Grizzly Bear vs. Polar Bear

So here's the question of the week. In an arena battle, with all things being equal for both "contestants," would a grizzly bear beat a polar bear, or vice versa? Again, let's assume both bears are reasonably in the same size range and are going into the fight fully fed, injury-free, etc.

OK, everyone, let's vote! Please add any insights into why you're voting one way or another.

Bear in mind this has real application, since there might be a large-mammal fight circuit starting up sometime soon. I don't want to suffer from unbearable losses when I place my bets.

  1. Hey Kirk! I'll have to think about this one- at our house it is strictly Lion vs. Tiger conversation. We'll discuss and I'll have Lee post our final answer on this one :)

  3. I was just playing the DS game Scribblenauts the other night and happened to be faced with this exact scenario. The polar bear won.

    True story.

  4. Hmmm. I would have to go for Polar Bear, just cause they can take down a seal, live in the arctic, swims like nothin else (I'll always go for the swimmer), hmmm.

That is a good question. I guess I've never really pondered it.

  5. I vote for the Grizzly. He's got a fiercer name and lives among fiercer creatures. Old polar bear deals with seals, caribou, foxes, hares, etc. Grizzly might get a snake bite or have a cougar sneak up on him. Like a ninja, he always has to watch his back.

  6. Polar bear, hands down. Better stamina. Plus, it's not like a seal is the easiest animal to take down. I wouldn't want one of those tusks headed my direction.

  7. I have given this a lot of thought. I polled the Seagull managers and they were in favor of the Polar Bear. I then looked online and the Grizzly has longer claws and is stockier. The polar bear has a long neck and skull, easier to damage in a fight. Polar bears are bigger though and have 10 centimeters of fat, not as easy to get to vital organs. I then decided to go to the zoo in Phoenix since I was down there. After distracting the workers I was able to climb into the cages of both the Grizzly and the Polar bear and after fighting both I would say that on land the Grizzly would win and in the water the Polar bear wins. Either way I win. What is next?

  8. Grizzlies have tougher predatorial competition in the wild and frequently cross paths with things like cougars, other grizzly bears, stuff that is scary, etc. Polar bears sit around and eat penguins. Like that's hard or something.

    1. You state: "Polar bears sit around and eat penguins. Like that's hard or something."

I understand its probably meant as a joke, however its actually very hard for a polar bear to eat a penguin because:

Contrary to popular belief, polar bears are not found in Antarctica or any region of the Southern Hemisphere. They can only be found in the Arctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere. While on this note, polar bears do not eat penguins since they live in the north, unlike penguins that live in the south.

  10. In fight with a Polar Bear and a Grizzly it comes down to brawn vs cunning and I take cunning anyday.
Let's face it a Polar Bear has a milder manner by reputation and they are always shown lounging around, but their prey is slipperier and they have to be more cunning to survive months in the arctic with no food.
I say they are more cunning and even a juvenile polar bear could out smart and out maneuver a big brawny Grizzly. I vote for the polar bear.

  13. I think polar bear is going to win the fight, no question about that. The Polar bear is much larger, faster, meaner, smarter than Grizzly bear.

  15. Grizzly. I think they are more athletic, they live in rugged terrain with valleys and mountains, when a polar bear lives in the flats and I think Grizzly bears probably get in more fights then polar bears
