Story Time

Harry Potter 6 is opening on Wednesday. Kids around the U.S. are trembling in anticipation for this popular book to be brought to life on the big screen. With our writing challenge starting and thoughts of Harry Potter circling through my mind, I begin to wonder what makes a really GREAT story? The kind that makes kids dream and adults want to read.

I think the world J.K. Rowling created is genius and I applaud her. There is a little something for everyone in her Harry Potter series and she truly captured something special. Now the question is, how do we capture that special something to pass on to our future readers?

  1. Isn't that the big question? Even Stephenie Meyer didn't do what J.K. Rowling did. It's quite astounding when you think about it.

  2. I can't wait for Half-Blood Prince!

I don't know that you can plan for that type of reaction to your work. If so, we'd probably have a lot more authors with J.K.'s level of success.

However, I think it's key to have characters that a lot of different people can relate to and root for.

  4. Hey, that's funny! I was watching a lot of HP6 previews on YouTube and TV and wrote a post about how excited I am for Harry Potter:

and then I see that you guys wrote about Pottermaina too! I am totally going to see this the day it comes out! Can't wait!

That's a mystery for the ages. What did Rowling do that made her books the best loved and best selling ever? I can only dream of reaching her level of fame as a published author, but I will be plenty happy if I can just finish writing my story! lol ^,~

Yeah, Harry Potter is gonna be a big distraction factor. I think I'll pull out of the writing contest thing. I don't know how to win anyway. But don't worry. That doesn't mean I'm going to stop writing!

  5. I thought we weren't telling our word count until the end of the month? How's this working then?

  6. So as of Wednesday 11:26 a.m., who has gone seen the show yet? Is it as good as the trailers make it look?

And Graham, I'm pretty sure that Friday 11:59 p.m. is the deadline for each week's tally.
